About

Bomi Tunstall is a pianist with a well-rounded background in performance, pedagogy, and chamber music. Her approach to performing emphasizes the communicative and storytelling qualities of music, and as a teacher she stresses individual expression through a knowledge of music theory and history realized and alive in sound. She holds music degrees from Johns Hopkins University (DMA) and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (MM & BM), studying with William Heiles and Benjamin Pasternack. Bomi has also performed for renowned artists such as Leon Fleisher, Charles Rosen, Boris Berman, and Awadagin Pratt in masterclasses. Her accolades include major prizes from the 11th Biennial International Beethoven Sonata Competition, the Society of American Musicians Competition, the Chicago Piano Duo Competition, and the 23rd Krannert Debut Artists Competition, which resulted in her debut CD publication featuring works of Rachmaninov, Debussy, and Beethoven. Dr. Tunstall has previously taught at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (WI), Frostburg State University (MD), Peabody Preparatory ofJohns Hopkins University (MD), and as TA at the University of Illinois. Concluding her work in Illinois as a private teacher, adjudicator, and pianist for the youth division of the Elgin Master Chorale, Bomi is excited to make Charlotte (NC) her new home from August 2020. Currently, she is on the music faculty at Queens University of Charlotte teaching music theory and ear training courses.
