About

Dr. Bomi Tunstall (DMA, MM, BM, NCTM) is a pianist and teacher with a well-rounded background in performance, pedagogy, and chamber music. She is currently a pianist for Opera Carolina and on the music theory faculty at Queens University of Charlotte. Her performances were well received by world-class artists such as Leon Fleisher, Boris Berman, Charles Rosen, and Awadagin Pratt. She was the winner of the 23rd Krannert Debut Artists Competition and received major prizes from the 11th Biennial International Beethoven Sonata Competition, the Society of American Musicians Competition, and the Chicago Piano Duo Competition.

 

She holds a doctoral degree from Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Her publications include the dissertation “Stravinsky, Jazz, and the New American Sound: Piano Music of Aaron Copland, William Schuman, Leonard Bernstein, and Lukas Foss,” an article for Clavier Companion Magazine “Passion Gives Us Purpose,” and a CD of “Piano Music of Rachmaninoff, Debussy, and Beethoven” on Beaux Musique Records.

 

Her additional pedagogy work includes a second master’s degree in pedagogy at UIUC, certifications from the Institute for Jaques-Dalcroze Education, the Greater Philadelphia Suzuki Institute, and the Chicago Suzuki Institute. Dr. Tunstall has previously taught at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Frostburg State University, Peabody Preparatory of Johns Hopkins, and University of Illinois. She is a frequent adjudicator for piano competitions and festivals in the Carolinas and performs with members of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Tunstall is a MTNA nationally certified teacher of music.
